This patrol was scheduled early but the planning then fell victim to the NSXPO in Pheonix and lunch at Hooter's in Sacramento. The plan was only kicked up again only 36 hours before departure. The route was already planned out, but not carefully scouted as some of the roads listed as paved on the map turned out to be dirt. Alternate routes we found and the map above as well as the linked S&T file reflect the actual route taken, at least as closely as S&T knows where the real roads are.

The turn out was light as usual. Many of
the old time pilots seem to have retired and prefer to remain in the soft
bed in the morning. The route was specifically chosen to try and
include some of the Stockton pilots, but they either slept in, or made other
plans. Properly caffeinated, the patrol set out at 6:25am from Gold River in search of the perfect back road.

The autumn colors were out in full force setting fire to the woods (in one section literally as a prescribed burn was under way) as the brave pilots wound their way through the valleys and over the mountains of their patrol route. Stopping only to admire the breathe taking views and listen to the babbling brooks. The road was winding and deserted. Very seldom another living soul in sight. Just the squirrels, chipmunks, and the one lone coyote. A rough assignment but someone had to do it and our brave lads were up to the challenge. | |
